| Governor orders auditor to restore property tax rebates
CROWN POINT | Gov. Mitch Daniels on Friday ordered the Lake County auditor to restore $9.7 million in property tax rebates to about 30,000 homeowners who were improperly denied the relief.Daniels ordered the immediate cutting of supplementary refund checks to those taxpayers -- many of whom received $0 rebate notices last week.At a news conference Friday, Daniels said the rebates were withheld from the Lake County homeowners -- who primarily live in Gary, Hammond, East Chicago and Whiting -- "through innocent confusion.""There are 29,000 property owners -- homeowners in some of the poorest neighborhoods who deserve more money," Daniels said.County Auditor Peggy Holinga Katona said Friday her office had begun generating the checks, which will go out by the end of the month."I'm happy this is finally resolved, and the rest will be getting their rebates," she said. The governor's intervention culminates a series of complaints from taxpayers who had been waiting months for rebates authorized by the Indiana General Assembly only to receive murky letters stating their rebates had been reduced because they already had received other tax breaks.State Rep.

Tax relief on pensions boosted
Taxpayers who have suddenly found themselves in the 40 per cent income tax band as a result of the chancellor's “mini-Budget" are being urged to take a look at their pension contributions. The chancellor's decision this week to reduce the higher-rate tax threshold from £41,435 to £40,835, as part of his £2.7bn cash handout to poorer households, has pushed 150,000 more people into the top rate of tax. .
Average tax savings nearly $268 for property owners in Warren Co.
Warren County property owners who applied and qualified for homestead/farmstead exemptions will receive a little more than first anticipated in property tax relief. According to Petter Turnquist, business administrator, the Warren County School District received $2,734,194 from state gaming revenue. That amount was divided between 10,205 properties (9,974 homesteads and 231 farmsteads) in the county. The property relief amounts to $267.93 per exemption. The school district was first projecting a tax savings of $170 based on dividing the allocation by the total number of eligible properties. Warren County's exemption per property is on the high end when compared to surrounding school districts. Property owners in the Forest Area School District will receive $146 in relief, which was $233,299 divided between 1,593 appoved properties.
